Damaged Roof: Repair Guide – Phoenix Contracting

Suppose a tree has fallen off your roof and has caused a major architectural problem. Should there be anything that needs to be reframed or any major roof repair, it is always best to consult a professional because certain things need to be done according to building codes.

Shingle Installation

In shingle installation, be sure to secure the nails into the felt and sheathing. This will help decrease the risk of a leak when the roof and shingles to expand due to heat, causing the nails to pop out of place.

Make sure that you install the shingles layer by layer going from the bottom to the top in an overlapping manner. This makes your roof safe from all-weather elements, especially that it is sloped and is more prone to leaks and other issues.

You can also rent a nail gun from the nearest hardware store, which costs about $20 per day. This makes it easier for you to make measurements because it usually comes with a guide, which helps save you a lot of time.

Repair Sheathing

When you are done cleaning the debris and getting the roof reframed, it’s time to lay done a sheathing or sometimes called a base. The standard sheathing material measures 8 ft and 1/2 inch thick plywood. It’s important to measure the sections correctly, especially the opening of the part of the roof. Follow the measurement and cut the plywood to size and nail the roof rafters. For extra strength, stagger the sheathing in a brick-like pattern, continually until the entire open area is covered with plywood seams. Entire 8-foot plywood is structurally unstable in the middle so, it shouldn’t be placed on to the roof.

Lay Felt Paper

First, staple a starter strip that is 6-inch long, place this at the bottom section of the roof. Leave at least 1-inch space on the eave for the drainage. Place the remaining felt layers and nail them, still in an overlapping manner. Do not miss a strip, make sure to nail each felt layer if you want to ensure security on your roof.

Install Shingles

At the bottom corner of the roof, lay the first row of shingles. With a base row of shingles, follow the chalk lines on the felt and work your way upwards following a pyramid shape. To ensure maximum grip and security, use at least six nails per shingle. Always make sure that you nail on the tar strip. Repeat the process continually, working your way across the entire roof. In case you need to repair a damaged section of the roof, you can just replace it with a new one or place the current shingle above the new one. Doing this makes it easier for you to have a seamless and perfect result.
