Seaman Corporation’s FiberTite single-ply roof membranes can now boast a leading 40-year reference service life, offering commercial property owners assurance of long-lasting performance through a comprehensive environmental product declaration.
An EPD is an independently verified document that provides transparent, quantifiable data about a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle. It enables informed decision-making in the built environment to support sustainability goals.
In a Jan. 28 news release, Seaman Corp. said its FiberTite EPD is “cradle-to-grave” and provides a complete life-cycle analysis, from raw material extraction to end-of-life, offering a clearer view of the membrane’s environmental contribution.
Comparatively, EPDs for most single-ply roof membranes currently account for only “cradle-to-gate” environmental impact — related only to raw material extraction through the manufacturing stage — without accounting for the roof membrane’s lifetime performance.
“We know that commercial building owners and operators everywhere are looking to make more sustainable choices without compromising their operational security or integrity,” said Peter Kirk, strategic market manager of Seaman Corporation. “This newly issued EPD is proof that FiberTite can accomplish both goals.”
The 40-year RSL is attributable to high performance in several key areas, including:
- Weather resistance: FiberTite membranes contain KEE polymer plasticizer, which resists evaporation and extraction due to long-term exposure to the elements, preventing embrittlement that could fail.
- Puncture resistance: FiberTite membranes contain a reinforcing fabric densely packed with fiber, maintaining excellent puncture resistance over the long term.
- Chemical resistance: FiberTite membranes demonstrate little change after long-term exposure to common chemicals, fats and oils, maintaining their structure in mass and flexibility.
These attributes enable FiberTite to minimize maintenance needs and early replacement costs, leading to lower total ownership costs for building owners and operators.
“Purchasing a commercial roof system is an investment in your business,” Kirk said. “We believe that installing a FiberTite Roof System is one of the best investments you can make.”
ASTM International approves the FiberTite EPD per ISO 14025, ISO 21930, ISO 14040/44, the NSF International’s Product Category Rules for Single-Ply Roofing Membranes and ASTM’s General Program Instructions for Type III EPD.
